A sad day for India..

Normally, such statements might be reserved for large-scale violence or a terrorist attack involving numerous deaths but the act of 'massacre' carried out at Sydney has dented the optimism and hopes of many Indians and has indeed hurt the pride of the nation.

Cricket has evoked many emotions in me but probably this is the first time it has truly brought me out not just to back the Indian team through and through but to even support the clarion call for abandonment of the tour to uphold the spirit of the gentleman's game. India went into the Sydney test after having suffered utter humiliation at Melbourne and they showed their ability to fight back in the first two sessions at Sydney. Having Australia on the mat at 134/6, the dream cherished by Dravid, Kumble, Sachin, Laxman and Saurav, in what would be their last series down under, of winning a test series in Australia seemed real. This was definitely India's best chance to come back into the series, their best chance to create history by beating the best cricket team in their own backyard. What followed next was not just an umpiring error but also the complete dashing of hopes of a 19 year old youngster!! I remember Bucknor doing the same poor old Murali Kartik at the same venue 4 yrs ago when I bunked all classes to watch India win on the final day - a win which was not to be thanks to Bucknor!! Just imagine what confidence Ishant would have carried forward had he got the prized wicket of Symonds at that crucial juncture!! Australia went on to post a mammoth 463 runs in their first innings in which the umpires had decided not to give any stumping or LBW!! All hopes of an Indian resurgence evaporated then. Still, there was some hope in the Indian batting with the old hands of Laxman, Dravid, Sachin and Ganguly playing stellar roles to take India to a competitive total of 532.

From what I saw on TV, there is no way Harbhajan could have gone on his own will to speak something to Symonds as Harbhajan and Sachin were batting brilliantly with Harbhajan completing his first fifty against Australia in test cricket. Surely, something provocative was said to Harbhajan to make him react in that manner. The end result - Ponting and co have combined to give Harbhajan a 3-test ban. For me, this surely is the greatest testimonial of racism in cricket - where white skinned people get together to hand over punishment to a brown-skinned person!! If that controversy was not sufficient, what followed in the Australian 2nd innings was appalling. Mr. Cricket is given not out when he is on 45. He goes on to score 145 runs and Australia score 401/7 setting India a target of 333 runs in the last innings. Ofcourse, I happen to miss a few plumb LBW appeals where were very conveniently turned down!!

If there was one man on whom I would bet my life to bail India out of trouble, it would be Rahul Sharad Dravid and indeed, he lived up true to the nickname of 'The WALL' which he has earned over the years!! A certain Mr. Benson conveniently forgot to signal no-ball for over-stepping but thanks to Symonds' drop catch, Dravid's innings was not unfortunately truncated. 38 runs, 103 balls and over two and a half hours - Rahul battled on to save the test match - He is the most selfless cricketer I have ever known to have played the game!! And what we got was an absolute shocker from Bucknor to end the most hard-working innings by Rahul. Saurav's glamorous innings was cut short with Ponting giving him out. Some say that even RP Singh was not out but that is very very insignificant for me in the larger context of the game.

The series should have been 1-1 at the end of the Sydney test but it reads in official records as 2-0 in favour of Australia. The series is long gone and there is not even cricketing pride to play for since even that has been snatched away by the umpires. There is only one thing left for Kumble and co - to return back to India. Forget Australia, forget the final frontier!! I know it's hard to forget a dream which one has cherished since a long time!! But surely the dream cannot be pursued in the midst of such a 'massacre'. If Kumble and co play at Perth, they have no shame, no pride in their nation.

though i wont say that it has dented the optimism of Indians, since we still believe in our team in the same way, we used to do before this match; but yes, it indeed has hurt the pride of the nation.. and more than that, the pride of the game.

the beauty of a game lies in the spirit, with which it is played. fatal errors and no regret is not the act of great people... and on top of that - the hosts are playing mind-game. Those who are most notorious for abusing others, now claim that a simple, bubbly Indian bowler has used objectionable language for them... absolutely ridiculous.

whatever has happened.. has happened.. I just wish, BCCI does not bother about lakhs and crores of rupees, involved in the remaining series.. and call its players back, immediately.

they went there for cricket.. but no cricket is happening there.

A couple of comments I have read since the match was lost:

The result had been different if India played against a 11 member team and not 14!

The series stands at:
Australia - 1
Bucknor - 1
India - 0

i would rather not say that it was a sad day for india but definitely it was a very sad day for Cricket. The game which has produced some great sportspersons has been put to shame at the SCG by the Champion side (as far as the statistics are concerned).

But the fight from the Indian side with the knocks of the big four and the resilience of dhoni and kumble make me proud as a fan of Cricket.

However, cricket no longer is the romantic game it once used to be.. Probably attributable to the attitude of 'winning at all costs' has undone the game.

Nevertheless, I would really like india to continue the fight down under by bringing up another determined performance at Perth. I am not really concerned about the result but the attitude with which the indian team would approach the next test (if they continue the tour, of course!)

HUNDRED PERCENT CORRECT!

WE INDIANS,if we have any FACE LEFT(other than Sharad Pawar''s not so straight face)then the entire TEAM INDIA should BAN ALL PLAY WITH AUSSIES.
The OFFICIALS,MALCOLM SPEED,MIKE PROCTER....ALL EX-RACIST,APARTHEID-riddled SOUTH AFRICANS now holding TOP POSITIONS IN ICC....ARE THE REAL RACISTS....HANG THEM FIRST....THEY HAVE "PLOTTED this CONSPIRACY to GET BHAJJI OUT OF THE ATTACK". RICKETY PONTING has no answers to BHAJJI''s finger-spin and is now "finger-pointing". ANDREW SYMONDS is not just a MONKEY but A CHIMPANZEE in human form. BAN HIM FOR LIFE. IF HE EVER STEPS INTO INDIAN SOIL we WILL NOT SPARE HIM.... ( Posted by INTENSIVEKS on Monday , January 07, 2008 at 14:26 )

The moment BHAJJI "rolled over like in SOCCER" on getting his "bunny RICKY PONTING" for the 8th time, PONTING and his team decided "to get even" with BHAJJI. For this they "roped in that Kala Kuwwa"...a BLIND BAT...i.e. BLIND to his UMPIRING but not so blind to the Aussies like SYMONDS who agreed to "reward" the Kaala Kuwwa with may be just a 1000 grand for his part in the conspiracy. THAT was how BHAJJI was "ensnared" to making a comment of "Monkey" when he should have made a "Kangaroo" of SYMONDS. Monkey represents "Lord Ram's best friends" in the Ramayana. This was a RAVANNA both in looks and in his heart...ANDREW SYMONDS...He is no cricketer...just a bulldozer who by his "intimidation and ganging looks" looks more a KILLER from a Bollywood Film.(Posted: January 7, 2008, 2:03 pm)

INTENSIVEKS NOW to have "proof of the pudding" the ICC should insist that technology be used "to record" "ALL THAT THE PLAYERS SAY ON THE CRICKET FIELD" by having a one way "microphone" tied to their necks. All that the players shout or even "mumble" should be recorded in a Central Room of the "3rd Umpire" or maybe a "4th Umpire''s Cabin". In this way all abuses, slurs, racist remarks, etc. would be "produced in evidence" in a Trial of Players. This will definitely put paid to all the "Saintly Words" of the Aussies called in a friendly terminology as banter or simply "SLEDGING". Shane Warne,Macgrath were also Past Masters of this spooky methodology used for "mind-games and setting up the opponents".
I WANT MORE PEOPLE TO SECOND this appeal of mine regarding THIS TECH-USE of having "remote-hearing MIKES around their NECKS". ( Posted: Monday , January 07, 2008 at 16:09 )

:) Arvind - its strange seeing how very intelligent and innovative Indian minds are reacting to this cricket match.
"ban the series, ban australia" etc etc
I see more 'strength' in unfair dealings like this - and I dont want India to come back...even if they had 3 times the bad decisions or bad sportsmanship in the Sydney test, I want them to plack...and kick ass!!
i think adversities in life bring on a 'fight or flight' reaction na? cmon...do all you guys support the flight option?
and intensiveks is out of line man - his comment needs to be dele

Lendl and Hrishi, it's all nice to say that the Indians should come out and fight back with determination at Perth. My point is simple - What if we get 5 bad decisions at Perth and go on to lose badly even there!!!

I really demand that the Sydney test should be officially derecognized alongwith an implementation of the rule of referrals for both sides - wherein each side is allowed to appeal against a decision made by the field umpire for a maximum of 3 times, unless it is upheld in their favour. It's a very simple but effective rule. This will go a long way in making cricket a more just game. What is the point watching India go down 4-0 when the result could well have been 3-1 in favour of India?

Ofcourse, cricket is not about winning alone. Infact, it lies in playing with the greatest amount of fairness and integrity on part of everybody - players and umpires!!! We want to see a contest decided on the basis of skills and not based on errors in judgement. It's important to note that we have two teams who are representing and playing for their countries, fighting hard out there - respect their effort and give them their due in terms of good decisions. Tell me - would you like a teacher who gives you 0 marks for a particular answer for which someone else gets 5 marks? We all desire fairness. It's the essence of society.

and youre the one who says people have to be 'hanged'.
please check ur head sir.

Arv sir - is Cinderella the only hard core India supporter?
cmon man, only people who are asking the Indian team to come back are hardcore supporters? I am disappointed sir....

LameassLemdu said...

as many bad decisions there were, whose fault was it that India lost 3 wickets in the space of an over? umpires? I dont think so...
maybe they were 'dejected' after the 2 bad decisions in the entire second innings....but i dont remember any rule in cricket which says 'throw away the match after 5 bad decisions'
i understand the sydney test was controversial, but i still see no valid enough reason to call the team back...
if they are dealt with bad umpiring next match - then walk off the field, then its justified....so many people around the world (including me) feel that all this hype is just stupid and unnecessary...

seriously...who ever considered australia 'gentleman' or players with good sportsmanship? I never have...so this comes as no suprise...they play to win, and thats what they are doing...no hardm since theyve always been like this.

INTENSIVEKS Mr.MALCOLM SPEED,fair enough. What we do not want is "separate RULES for AUSTRALIA"! Will your ICC accept what the Indian Players allege about BRAD HOGG at face value? Will U not then say it was made-up by the Indians to defeat the Aussie attempt,a retaliation of sorts? Why will you not give a Summary court-martial to Brad Hogg irrespective of who heard it or who was in the vicinity just like they manipulated HARBHAJAN??
ALL THAT THE INDIANS ARE ASKING IS FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR JUDGEMENT BASED ON "VERIFIABLE TRUTH ONLY",NOT ON "HEARSAY EVIDENCE"...
AND THERE ARE UMPTEEN VIDEO FOOTAGES OF THE MATCH That Mr.Malcom Speed can view and decipher and determine. U don''t require a "specially-appointed New Zealand Judge for a matter which is as simple and as transparent as the Harbhajan case in point". Certainly on viewing the footages and listening to the commentary, U will know why more than 100 Million people of India believe that Harbhajan has been "done-in" by the Aussies in connivance with the stupid and biased Umpire Steeve Bucknor.
Mr.Malcolm Speed this is certainly not "SPEEDY JUSTICE"! ( Posted: Thursday , January 10, 2008 at 15:57 )

Hey, meanwhile I have joined a nice volunteership in Champaign, Il itself. I am working (unpaid) at the Children's Science Museum. They have cute animals, turtles and reptiles and science toys and very cute kids. I thought I might tell you, because you seem to be interested in alternative education. I wish we could have such facilities in India too. I'll continue this volunteership till my company calls me to join. ~Saumya
